Comment: I think this board is great. I have an AMD K6-2 400 o/c to 500MHz and have no stability problems. I don't have anything to measure the temp, but the heatsink is cool. I am running this m/b with a Voodoo 3 2000 (o/c to about 175MHz with cooling fan). It all works great and I have UDMA/66 capability as well. I would rate this board very high!

I overclocked my 500 MHz tot 540 using 120*4.5 with 2.9V. windowsME runs very stable. but the problem with my geforce is not gone yet.. is the CPU the constraint? some people say that k6-2 is to slow.. any comment on that one?

Comment: I would like to rate this board as being good, but unfortunately it stinks. it seems as though the board is unable to supply enough power to the agp slot to run a viper ii card; the system locks when it tries to detect the peripherals. works okay with an old pci diamond stealth 2000, but still nothing to write home about. my advice if you are interested in this board with agp- look elsewhere.

Comment: stress!! need help. have GA-5ax, amd k6-2 500, 64MB, Voodoo 3 2000 16MB pci and creative SB AWE 64 value. System freezes without fail if it i try to run any game or app off CD, not even the dreaded blue screen. Apps or games running off disk dont have problem, can even run 3dfx games like fifa98. Cant see any irq conflicts either. Dont know where to start. had problems ever since installing the 5ax - not impressed. Is using all the Ali drivers gonna make much difference?

Comment: Well I have always extolled gigabytes virtues but this time I am Disgusted! I have recently upgraded to the Rev 5 of this board and want to put a Guillemot G-Force DDR-DVI on and am having nothing but trouble. First it just used to drop out no warning nothing no set pattern, didnt even need to be under stress, Now when I think I have conquered it??? it decides that it will corrupt all my graphics for me. And I dont just mean in windows, it will do it at bois level too. So if any of you out there know what the HELL iam doing wrong then please let me know???

Comment: Last december I built a computer using the Gigabyte GA5AX motherboard, 400 MHz AMD K6-2, 64MB RAM, 6.4 GB western digital hard drive, 8 MB ATI xpert 98 video, sound blaster PCI 128, 56K rockwell modem, and a 40X Acer CD ROM drive. Windows 98SE ran without any problems IF you load in the Ali drivers that came with the motherboard. Otherwise, the system frequently crashes. I think it's a good motherboard once everything works fine.

Comment: Overall not a very good board. I own the Rev1.5 edition and have had nothing but problems with it. Constant crashes (though these did stop when i tested a Geforce 256 in it, so my voodoo3 could be the cause). I configured some options in the bios and this has stoped most of the lockups and crashes. However i still have constant crashes in apps, i am presuming that it is the motherboard as i have read of other people having the same problem.

Comment: I recently built a machine with this board, a K6-2 500, Elsa Erazor 3 Pro (VIVO version, with TNT2-Pro) SB Live! player 1024, and the rest were standard (128mb ram, 20gb hd). at first, i also noticed the default settings were 'stupid' to say the least, and the fact that Gigabyte didnt give the latest version of the AGP drivers didnt help when using D3D as it crashed, but all was sorted with some software updates. Quite a nippy configuration! i dont know what the rest of you are moaning about!

Comment: I have the V4.1 thats supposed to have a power problem on the AGP, I have recently found out that this power fault is untrue. Infact the AGP port Voltage reg chip can supply 7.5 amps. Take a look at http://www.supermanthemes.com then click on Gigabyte 5AX. I found that the best thing to do when adding an AGP Graphics Card is not to use the PCI slot next door to the AGP. This has enabled me to run an ATI Rage 128 (Xpert 2000). I am running AMD 450, 192MB Pc100 Dimm, Sound B Live! 1024, Voodoo 2, 2 Video Cards (Matrox Mystique 220+RRS & ATI Rage 128 AGP), 2x 25 Gig IBM HDD, OS: Win98. would like ATA66 support, but otherwise Good Stable Board.

Comment: Great Board.AMD k6-2 450 slightly overclocked to 500mhz ,although more is possible. Used to run it with a Voodoo3 3000 ,no problems at all. Now with a Asus Geforce 6800 , also stable. OS:Win 98 ,Sound: LiveDriveII , 256MB , 2 HDD Quantum .My experience is to have a good power supply unit is very important. The only thing I miss is the ATA66 support ,I got Rev.4.

Comment: Just got the 5.2 version of this board to replace my piece-O-crap Biostar M5ALA and I'm very happy with it. I put it through the benchmarking and and gaming tortures and it came out great with an existing Win98 install from over a year ago updated to SE and newest drivers, patches, etc. With the same components I had before I have no problems overclocking my K63-400 to 450 and my Voodoo3 2000 AGP to 176 stable with lower CPU voltage. DVD playback is great, ATAPI devices are properly recognized and work at full capacity/speed. Ultra66 support is very good too. I have 5 IDE drives, 2 ISA cards, 3 PCI cards and the V3 2K. All work great together with 3 generic PC100 or better 64MB RAM sticks. The layout is top notch and setup was a dream. Of the two mainboards I considered (EPOXMVP3G2 & Giga-ByteGA5AX) I went with this one because I could get it locally and since my old board was ALi I figured it wouls be a simple swap, which it was... Be wary of enabling ACPI though, it works but you have to go safe mode and get rid of the "leftovers" in the device manager. GREAT BOARD

Comment: I upgraded to one of these a few months back and it's great. I am using win95/ K6/2 450Mhz 64Mb RAM. Windows just needed a clean install and when you know how to work it it's fine. It has an extrememly easy board setup with very little that needs doing. I setup both a 4.1 and 5.2 and found the slots very tight on the 4.1 but rev5.2 seems fine, apart from the agp card being pulled out when you screw it in but I've solved that now. I highly recommend this board.

Comment: installed it with K6-2-500 . Tried it with 95 OSR2.5 but couldn't get the USB to install despite latest drivers etc .Messed about for a couple of days trying to get it to work properly with no luck . Installed 98SE and its worked perfectly ever since.

Comment: Update on my 16-May-00 post: Ok, i have had a really good chance to settle in with this new setup and i am mostly pleased. I couldn't ask for a more reliable motherboard, although i have noticed that the gaming performance is somewhat lesser than the old p3/450 setup. I'm using all the same components(v3 3000,aureal sq2500, same ram etc..) I don't know if this is just the 550mhz K6/2 not being as strong in the FPU as the P3 or if it's some AGP issue with the board. I haven't had any locks or crashes after hours and hours of UT and Q3a play. The only problem i have had is Q2 crashing to desktop(i think this is a v3 issue).

Comment: I was somewhat leary of going from a Soyo SY6BA+IV w/P3 450mhz to the Super7 platform(more bang for the buck), but after my first month i couldn't be happier! I love this setup(K6/2-550,Voodoo3 3000agp,256mb PC100,WD 20.5gig ATA66,Aureal SQ2500). I loved my Soyo/p3 setup but i had gobs of IRQ issues due to the 8drive support/ATA66 controller and frequent system crashes. I have had no problems even close with the Gigabyte setup. Performace is great, Stability is super! I have read all the stuff about the Voodoo3/instability and the only thing i can figure is that they fixed that with the revision5.2. I have gamed for hours without problem(Unreal Tournament and Quake3 arena).......all in all i'm VERY HAPPY!

Comment: Have you tried 6.0x95 (570, same as 2.0 multiplier) 5.0x112 (560) or 4.5x124 (558) (try these at 2.5v, these settings are from my Soyo 5EMA+). The main reason it won't POST is because the K6-2 won't work with very high speeds over 570MHz, or the mobo doesn't support the speed.

Comment: :-) GA5-AX rev 5.2, k6/2 500@550, 128Mb Crucial PC100 RAM, Diamond Stealth III S540 AGP, Maxtor 15Gb UDMA66/7200 Was apprehensive about setting up the board after all the horror stories about it but have been pleasantly surprised. Only initial problems were VERY tight card and mem slots, especially the AGP. Tightening up the slot screw prized the card out of its slot enough for it not to boot. Currently running K6/2 500 @ 5x110 with 2.3v core. Stealth III S540 overclocked @ 145/140. Completely stable with no apparent heat problems. Have run Final Reality on loop for over 24hrs to test without problems. Anyone give me some idea as to why it wouldn't get past post at 5.5x100? (other settings were the same as above). Also, does anyone know how or if poss to get a temp reading from the temp sensor on the GA5-AX? Thanks.

Comment: 5AX + Voodoo3 :-( Running AMD K6/2 450, 192MB RAM, Voodoo3 3000 AGP, SB Live 1024 on Win98. Most 3D games used to freeze but after installing an extra 128MB and the SB Live, games shut off the monitor and freeze the computer. Only if someone out there can help! The only reason why I got the 5AX was because my Voodoo3 packed up on my Chaintech motherboard. Chaintech claims that the card should never have worked in that board ... yeah right! ... I worked brilliantly for about 5 months!!!

Comment: I bought a revision 4.1 mobo, overall i was impresed i got good graphic capablitys with VooDoo3 2000 PCI ( left over from my last machine). I then tried to replace my graphics card with a riva TNT 2 Pro card. DONT Do this Ignore what GIGABYTE say there are BIG Compatablity Problems with the Highend Grphics Cards and this MOBO. I have now bought a Rev 5.2 MOBO this is great it supports all high end grphics and has full ATA/66 support, my k6-2 450 is overclocked to 500 easly. Some dealers are still selling the Rev 4.1 Watch out overall this is a great Mobo but GET A REV 5.2 BOARD or you will regreat it.!!!!

Comment: I absolutely love this board. ATA66 support is execellent, and my k62-500 overclocks to 525 with ease. v5.x revisions of this board are much better than the v4.x and earlier because of ata66 and better video card compat.
